Moments Captured on Film Right Before Tragedy

9. A Teacher Caught Saving Students From a Mass Shooting

On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold entered Columbine High School and started shooting students and faculty. William ‘Dave” Sanders, a teacher, ran to the cafeteria to warn the students. He was able to evacuate everyone to safety. That day Harris and Klebold shot twelve students and one teacher—the teacher being Dave.

In this image Dave is seen running to the cafeteria, risking his life to save those of the pupils seen in the image. Dave managed to save a large number of lives, at the expense of his own. He died a hero.

10. The Last Photo of The Uruguayan Rugby Team Before The Plane Crash

The Uruguayan plane crash tragedy occurred on October 13, 1972, when a Fairchild aircraft carrying 45 passengers, including members of the Uruguayan rugby team, crashed in the Andes Mountains. This photo is the last one taken of the team, moments before the plane crashed. The 5 men you see here survived the crash, but sadly the man second to the left, Gustavo Nicolich, died in an avalanche two weeks later.

After 72 days stranded in the harsh conditions, survivors faced extreme cold, hunger, and desperation. Lacking proper equipment, some resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. The ordeal became infamous for the survivors’ extraordinary resilience and their ultimate rescue on December 20, 1972. Of the 45 initially on board, 28 survived the initial crash but only 16 survived the 72 days in the mountains.
